CCCP and Adidas

There was some fuss today about the fact that Adidas sells in Tallinn T-shirts which have letters CCCP on them. For those who do not know, those letters stand for the Russian-language acronym for the Soviet Union, which occupied Estonia for 50 years. One newspaper (Postimees) has picked the story up and is running with it. A number of people are complaining and vowing to never buy Adidas products.

I am not a big fan of Adidas clothes, but I could buy a CCCP shirt just to upset and outrage some Estonian nationalists, who seemingly are a bunch of idiots. Get over it, it is just a T-shirt. It has no other point than to shock people and it has served its purpose incredibly well.

I am no communist nor do I look back at the Soviet times with nostalgia, but I think it is about time we as Estonians got over the occupation at some point. The only point in keeping the topic up and existing is to incite russophobia.

If one were to boycott Adidas products one could do it for real, genuine reasons, such as the poor living and working conditions of the workers of the factories where these products are made or some anti-globalist reason. But really, the expressions on the T-shirts are no business of any others than those who actually wear them.

The CCCP stuff is cool, underground and has shock value for many, so naturally people want to buy these products. Adidas simply caters for that need.

Wouldn’t that be akin to Jews wearing swastika teeshirts? Perhaps not. Just curious.

How would you react when somebody wore a T-shirt with a swastika on it? I would tolerate it as much as CCCP… because it is a free republic…
